■ ■ On September 14, 2016, SOSA held a suturing workshop in the anatomy lab at VCOM for first-and second-year students. Mike Breiner, MD, taught second-year students advanced techniques and second-year students helped to teach first-year students basic skills. ■ ■ SOSA designed and hosted mock anatomy practicals for VCOM students. SOSA members served as proctors during the exam and answered students’ questions afterward. ■ ■ On May 4, 2016, officers hosted a panel of fourth-year students who matched into a variety of procedure-heavy specialties, including general

surgery, OB/GYN and internal medicine. The panel was offered as a lunch event to first-and second-year students who were able to ask questions to the fourth-year students regarding their medical school experience, audition rotations and their upcoming residency programs with an emphasis on surgical themes.

Association (SOSA) aims to represent and educate the future surgeons in the student body at VCOM. The organization sponsors different activities such as helping students to understand osteopathic principles in relationship to disease in the practice of surgery, promoting education in the field of surgery, including gowning, gloving, scrubbing, sterile technique, operating room behavior, instruments, universal precautions, OMM of surgical patients and additional skills that are relevant to the specialty.

■ ■ On March 25th, SOSA held the inaugural Project Smile event to help the Wimbish

family of Martinsville, Virginia. The family's 9-month-old son was born with a cleft lip and palate. Through Penny Wars, a GoFundMe and a Powder Puff football game, SOSA raised money to pay for his surgery.
