ACOI American College of Osteopathic Internistis (ACOI-Internal Medicine)

T he American College of Osteopathic Internists (ACOI) works to give VCOM students the resources they need to pursue a successful career in internal medicine. Members learn about various sub-specialties of internal medicine such as cardiology, endocrinology and pulmonology through VCOM faculty and numerous guest speakers throughout the year. ■ ■ On December 1, 2016, Samuel K. Snyder, DO from Nova Southeastern University was hosted by ACOI. He spoke to more than 30 students about using rotations to get the residencies of their dreams.

gathering history and moving beyond learning procedures, to become the best doctor possible. “This is about the kind of person you would want to be in order to be the kind of doctor you would want to go to,” Dr. Snyder said. ■ ■ On April 25, 2016, ACOI hosted guest speaker Chris Neglia, DO, from Kingsport, Tennessee for an Extensivist Clinic Seminar. He spoke about starting his clinic in Tennessee to try and limit financial burdens of acutely ill patients by preventing them from having to go to the emergency room. ■ ■ ACOI hosted a Central Line Workshop on June 6,

2016 where several faculty members taught students to place central lines and use ultrasound equipment. The hands-on experience helped students to apply concepts they learned in lecture. ■ ■ On September 27, 2016, Josh Eikenberg, MD, a dermatologist in Roanoke, presented interesting dermatology cases to the students, described the types of patients he normally sees, and spoke about the typical day-to-day life of a resident and dermatologist. He gave the students tips on how to be completive in getting residencies and told them about his path to becoming a dermatologist.
