T he VCOM Student Chapter of the Virginia Rural Health Association (VRHA) was established to contribute to the mission of the College by serving locally to improve the health of rural communities health education. Assistance is available to members to promote leadership on rural issues through advocacy, communications, education and research. The VCOM chapter of the VRHA was the first established medical school chapter in Virginia in representing the state VRHA. Each year the organization meets the needs of many people in southwest Virginia. through the delivery of healthcare services and

■ ■ The Virginia Rural Health Association held the second annual Dueling Desserts event in which contestants prepared their favorite desserts and allowed their fellow VCOM classmates, faculty and staff to judge the best dessert. ■ ■ Students were encouraged to donate canned goods and over 200 canned goods were donated to Feeding America Southwest Virginia during Hunger Awareness Month. The money that was raised was donated to Roanoke Rescue Mission. ■ ■ This year the flu shot clinic was replaced with a Blacksburg Health fair. Students were able to volunteer to serve the

community by offering cancer screening, OMM treatments, BMI measurements, blood pressure measurements, vaccination education and cholesterol screening to workers of the local Blacksburg community. The event was very well attended with a total of over 150 participants. ■ ■ VCOM students, faculty and staff were invited by VRHA to volunteer for the Montgomery County Christmas Store. The Christmas Store is an all-volunteer run charity organization in which underserved families can shop for their families Christmas gifts, as well as receive a food basket to feed their families during the holidays.
