VCOM Focus Winners Segment 4 Theme: Fulfilling Needs

1 st Place Nancy Sarmiento - Class of 2019

Photo Title: "Building a Better Place Step by Step” Description: This photograph was taken in March of 2013 in Esmeraldas, Ecuador. I love this photo because it is so "raw" in itself. This was a staircase that myself and 5 others built for a small community. Ecuador is known for its beautiful, mountainous terrain. However, many do not know that is poses a hazard for those living in these areas since they have to walk down very steep hills daily. It is something so simple, yet so necessary for those in that community.

2 nd Place Cameron Cook – Class of 2019 Photo Title: "Bridging the Gap”

Description: As Osteopathic physicians we seek to fulfill the needs of our fellowman, especially those most in need. This medieval Spanish bridge reminds me of that. We strive to bridge the gap between the quality of life our patients currently have and where they want to be. It is both a sobering responsibility and an awesome privilege.

rd Place Del Bolin, MD, PhD – VCOM Faculty Photo Title: "The Need Outside My Window”

Description: While seeing patients in a church in the hills of Honduras, I looked out the window and saw this little girl waiting alone to get treated and took her picture; it was a reminder of the great need there is for care. I named the picture before I knew the theme for this focus segment.
