VCOM Focus Winners Segment 3 Theme: Changing the World

1 st Place Natasha Khawaja- Class of 2017 Photo Title: "Pass the Salt”

Description: The discovery of salt changed the way humans lived and in many cases directed the course of civilizations. It preserved food, invigorated the palate, created trade routes, accumulated fortunes, and incited wars. It is essential for research, science, medicine, and basic human survival. Its uses continue to evolve and change the world with it. Salina Turda (Salt Mine) – Transylvania Province, Romania

2 nd Place Katherine Kirby - Class of 2018 Photo Title: "Carving New Pathways”

Description: This photo is taken at the Decameron Resort in El Salvador during my mission trip on January 1, 2016. I feel this photo symbolizes the theme of ‘Changing the World’ in several ways. First, traveling to a different country for a mission trip literally changes how you see the world. It broadens your mind to think of others instead of just the world you live in day in and day out. Also, this photo was taken on January 1st of a brand new year reminding me that in order to change the world you have to start something new. Still, there is a deeper symbolism I see in this photo to the theme. This photo to me shows that in order to change the world or this simple patch of sand you have to create a new path. Changing the world is not always as easy as drawing a line from point A to point B. Just as this water from the Pacific Ocean winds its way through the sand, in order to change the world one must be willing to carve new paths towards a better tomorrow. 3 rd Place

Kim Stewart - Class of 2019 Photo Title: "Local Serenity for Transformation” Description: Keeping with the local theme that is a huge part of VCOM’s mission, this photo is of Pandapas Pond. It is representative of how here at VCOM we are transformed into beautiful butterflies where we will soar out into the world and make changes as future doctors, yet always knowing we have a comforting place for reflection and rejuvenation.
