recently, she served as the Business Manager for the College of Veterinary Medicine. During her time in the position, she was responsible for oversight and management of finance, human resources, facilities and safety/security at the College. One of the largest projects that she was involved with was construction of the new Bailey Small Animal Teaching Hospital. In that role, Karla acted as a liaison between administration and the project managers. Karla was heavily involved in Boy Scouts, where she served as a Den Leader, Cub Master, Assistant District Leader and Executive Board member. When not working, she enjoys spending time with her husband, two sons and two dogs. Karla also enjoys working in the garden, weight lifting and reading.

Scott has joined VCOM–Auburn as the new Director of Communications. Scott has a diverse background in journalism, public relations and graphic design. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in corporate journalism in 1998 from Auburn University. Scott came back to Auburn University and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in graphic

design in 2002. Prior to coming to VCOM–Auburn, Scott worked for Auburn University, was co-owner of a retail store in Auburn, and worked for six years as the Director of Communications at a large state trade association in Montgomery, Alabama. Scott enjoys spending time with his wife, Margaret, and his daughter, Eloise. Scott’s interests outside of work involve outdoor activities. Fly fishing, sailing and working on his family’s farm are a few of his favorite activities. Scott also enjoys gardening, is a past Lee County Master Gardener and is a current member of the Auburn- Opelika Men’s Camellia Club.

R. Kraig Smith MD, FACOG Clinical Faculty - Clinical Co-Chair OB-Gyn

R. Kraig Smith, MD, has joined VCOM–Auburn and will be working with VCOM students as a co-chair in the OB-GYN discipline. His path began when he graduated from the University of Alabama with a Bachelor of Science. Dr. Smith subsequently attended the University of Alabama School of Medicine, where he became interested in the field of OB/

GYN, and completed his residency as well. Upon oraduation from residency, Dr. Smith moved to the Auburn-Opelika area where he began practicing with a local OB-Gyn group; he has now completed 26 years of practice serving the area. He was invited to serve as a preceptor for third year VCOM students, and found this to be extremely rewarding. He looks forward to a more active role at the second-year level. As much as Dr. Smith enjoys practicing medicine and teaching, he also has many outside interests. For the last 15 years, he has been a member of a local cover band and enjoy playing music of all genres. Dr. Smith is also an avid golfer and spends other free time doing woodworking.
