Black Physician Panel Inspires Future Medical Professionals at VCOM-Auburn

I n February, the VCOM (SNMA) hosted a Black Physician Panel aimed at fostering dialogue and supporting participation in the field of medicine. The event featured alumni Dr. Anesia Allen, Dr. Hannah Autin, and Dr. Haleigh Eubanks—all members of the VCOM-Auburn Class of 2021—alongside faculty member Mayra Rodriguez, PhD, MPH. First- and second-year medical students heard from the panelists about their journeys through medical education and into professional practice. Topics ranged from systemic bias and health inequities to the value of mentorship and becoming leaders in their communities. Mayra Rodriguez, who serves as VCOM-Auburn’s discipline chair for epidemiology, community Auburn chapter of the Student National Medical Association

and public health, and preventive medicine, emphasized that events like this help students build cultural competence, challenge stereotypes, and expand their perspectives on professionalism in healthcare. “Inviting a panel of Black physicians positively impacts all medical students by promoting representation, helping to address stereotypes, and affirming a sense of belonging, especially for Black students,” she said. “These discussions also encourage critical thinking about health equity and advocacy.” For Dr. Allen, the panel was a full-circle moment. “It was an honor and a blessing to have the opportunity to speak,” she shared. “It seemed like yesterday I was attending the same panel, dreaming of what it may be like as an attending and using it as motivation to keep going. I hope the students

left feeling not only inspired but more knowledgeable about what’s ahead in their careers.” She also emphasized the importance of guidance in medicine, especially for first generation physicians. “It is crucial to have a mentor or someone who went before you to help in any way possible.”
