Alumni & Development Davis Medical Scholarship Established to Help Community College Graduates Become Physicians S andra Davis grew up on a farm in Floyd County, Virginia, where only two doctors gave medical care to the residents for many years. As a young person, she was aware that many people in the county could not receive care, and VCOM’s mission of returning physicians to practice in rural areas is very meaningful to her. by Amy Ostroth

Sandy’s husband, William “Jack” Davis, shares his wife’s commitment to community service. Jack came to Blacksburg in 2000 to head the Virginia Center for Civil War Studies at Virginia Tech, a role he held until he retired in 2013. Like Sandy, Jack’s community service is wide and varied, reflecting his interests in history, public broadcasting and education. He served on the Advisory Board of the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission and regularly supports historic preservation organizations. He is currently serving on the Radford University Board of Visitors and is also the chair for the Blue Ridge PBS Board of Directors. After he retired, Jack says, community service got him out of the house and gave him a chance to meet people he might not have known otherwise. It has also been an opportunity to have some input and impact on the future of organizations that are interesting and important to him.

Sandy came to Blacksburg in the mid-1970s. She and her late husband began BCR Real Estate and Property Management with offices in Radford and Blacksburg. After being in operation for forty years, Sandy closed the business to retire. Sandy is active in several roles in the community and region, including currently serving on the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors, the VCOM Board of Directors, the Carilion NRV Board of Directors, and the New River Community College Board of Directors.
