others up. She would like to see other alumni join her. She knows her alumni colleagues are busy, but “a little goes a long way,” she observes. “An hour once a year to help the people trying to follow in your footsteps can be inspiring.” What would she say to other alumni to encourage them to give back? “Be proud of where your training came from,” she says. “VCOM gave us the launching point for our careers, and we should look for opportunities to continue that. We can help the program evolve by giving back financially or doing a panel or talking to students.” The VPEs are offered for applicants at any of VCOM’s four campuses. Specialties represented by alumni have included sports medicine, family medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, internal medicine, ENT, urology, ophthalmology and more. More than 20 alumni have joined in so far and King is recruiting others so that applicants can see the diversity of specialties, practice environments and locations where VCOM alumni serve their communities. Attendees have found the panels both inspiring and helpful. “I appreciated the newfound knowledge on VCOM and also their input on osteopathy and medicine as a whole. . . . VCOM was a very high-interest school for me before this event and is even more so now,” said one. “I knew I was going to leave with good information, but I am also leaving this session feeling so uplifted,” said another. “The panels open the door to students who might not otherwise have access to DOs,” King notes. “Meeting a variety of alumni virtually who are practicing physicians has been a great opportunity for prospective students and for our amazing VCOM alumni who are looking for ways to give back to their alma mater.”
