i. Proactively inform the supervising faculty physician or Director for Student Medical Education of concerns about excessive or substandard levels of supervision. j. Perform procedures with the supervision of the licensed medical provider. 1. The Department of Health and Human Services via the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and many states require that medical providers obtain informed consent from patients prior to performing sensitive examinations, particularly on patients under anesthesia. VCOM students participating in clinical training shall not perform a sensitive examination, including but not limited to, breast, pelvic, prostate, and rectal examination, as well as others specified under state law, on an anesthetized or unconscious patient unless the patient or authorized agent gives informed consent to such examination, the performance of such examination is within the scope of care ordered for the patient, or in the case of a patient incapable of giving informed consent, the examination is necessary for diagnosis or treatment of such patient. k. Enter notes within the Electronic Medical Record for educational purposes, if cleared by the rotation site and supervising physician. The student must sign and date all entries on the medical record by name and education status (e.g. John Doe, OMS 3). The student notes must be reviewed and signed off by the clinical preceptor. Students will not enter patient charts if they are not assigned to their medical team. At no time do student notes serve as the attending physician’s notes. Billing must be directly related to the attending physician’s notes. Some sites have separate pages in charts set aside for "Student Progress Notes.” These should also be reviewed and co-signed by the attending physician. 1. Medical Records that are falsified or that are left uncompleted when it is the responsibility of the student to complete, are considered a professional/ethical violation and the student will be subject to the policies and procedures in the student handbook that apply to the violation. l. Shall not order any examinations, tests, medications, or procedures, or write any patient care orders without consulting and obtaining the authorization of the supervising faculty physician. 1. Shall only write prescriptions as an educational activity. 2. Medical students are strictly prohibited from writing orders regarding end-of-life, such as DNR. m. May not accept payment or remuneration for services. n. Request regular feedback, both positive and constructive, from clinical faculty. o. Inform the Director of Student Medical Education and Site Coordinator of any clinical, administrative, professional, or educational concerns. p. Participate in the utilization of Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM) when appropriate. Students are allowed to perform High Velocity Low Amplitude (HVLA) OMM only under the supervision of an licensed physician who possesses the appropriate scope of training in OMM. Off-Campus Consultation or Academic Work When faculty members are invited to provide their expertise to outside institutions, they are encouraged to do so providing that such activities: 1. Are directly related to the professional interest, expertise, and improvement of the faculty or staff member. 2. Are in the best interest of the division and VCOM. 3. Do not constitute a conflict of interest. 4. Do not interfere with regular instructional duties of faculty/staff. 5. Are not funded or considered employment unless funding is designated to VCOM or unless such employment has been approved by the Campus Dean. The appropriate Campus Dean, after consultation with the employee, will determine if any financial services will remain the property of the individual or VCOM, depending upon time commitment and the freedom from VCOM
