Appointment Re-Credentialing All clinical track faculty will undergo appointment re-credentialing five years following their date of initial appointment and every five years thereafter. Full- and part-time employed Academic Track faculty at VCOM are not required to participate in the five-year appointment re-credentialing process, as Academic Track faculty’s credentials are reviewed annually through the faculty evaluation process and when seeking contract renewal. Appointment re-credentialing is contingent upon submission of an updated CV, active medical licensure, and current board certification if applicable, and any outstanding teaching evaluations, publications, and/or any faculty development attended. Application for appointment re-credentialing will be reviewed by the appropriate Department Chair and Associate Dean who will submit recommendations to the APT Committee for final review. Completion of re-credentialing renews the faculty appointment at the rank granted at the last appointment for another five years. Failure to complete appointment re-credentialing within a reasonable timeframe may result in appointment inactivation. Appointment Re-Activation Academic track, clinical track, research track, or adjunct faculty who leave VCOM’s employment, but who later resume their employment with VCOM, must apply to the APT Committee for appointment re-activation upon their return. Appointment re-activation is contingent upon submission of an updated CV, active medical licensure if applicable, and current board certification if applicable, and any outstanding teaching evaluations, publications, and/or any faculty development attended. Application for appointment re-activation will be reviewed by the appropriate Department Chair and Associate Dean who will submit recommendations to the APT Committee for final review. Completion of re-activation renews the faculty appointment at the rank granted at the last appointment. Faculty Promotion in Academic Rank Promotion of faculty in rank is a means by which VCOM recognizes excellence in its faculty. Promotions are not simply awarded for years of service but are earned by the faculty member's efforts to work towards the goals of the College. Promotion in rank is a peer-review process wherein candidates are judged against specific standards that are in alignment with the College and criteria from certain national standards. These guidelines are intended to broadly define the minimum performance levels associated with the academic ranks between Assistant Instructor and Professor. Promotion in rank represents the progression through increasing levels of collective academic performance and responsibilities in the areas of teaching, research and scholarly activity, service, and leadership. Regardless of rank, all faculty seeking promotion in academic rank are to be evaluated in these areas when considered for promotion and tenure. Academic rank does not define tenure and is awarded separately from tenure. Teaching specifically refers to the teaching of VCOM medical students, residents, and fellows. Full-time faculty status will not be granted to those persons who incidentally contribute to the teaching or research programs of VCOM in the course or performing other duties. Education duties on campus are determined by the Associate Dean for Medical Education and education duties in the clinical site is determined by the Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs. Research and scholarly activity may be performed in the areas of education, biomedical, or clinical research. Faculty who have research duties within their contracted time are expected to perform research, to produce scholarly activity related to that research, and to consistently participate in grant submissions and fundraising efforts toward the support of that research.
