VCOM Faculty Handbook

Associate Dean and Campus Dean will then prepare a short-list of candidates for interview and will forward the applicants’ application materials to the Search Committee. The Associate Dean, with the aid of Human Resources, will send a letter to applicants not meeting the minimum job qualifications thanking them for their interest in VCOM. The Associate Dean will also contact the candidate(s) via telephone/Zoom and will ask preliminary questions pertinent to the position. The Associate Dean will record any further pertinent information regarding the candidate on the Faculty Recruitment Preliminary Interview Form, which will become part of the recruitment record. Search Committee For individual campus hires, the Campus Dean will serve as the hiring officer and will appoint a Search Committee. The Campus Dean will review the appropriate candidates with the Provost prior to inviting them for interview. The Search Committee will generally include the Campus Dean; the Associate Dean for Curriculum, Assessment and Medical Education; the Associate Dean for Biomedical Affairs; and/or the Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs (depending upon the hire) and may appoint others pertinent to the position. If recruitment is for a Biomedical Discipline Chair, the Vice President for Research is also included on the Search Committee. The Campus Dean may appoint one or more additional faculty members, when needed, for evaluation of content expertise. The Campus Dean will appoint the appropriate Associate Dean to serve as the Chair of the Search Committee. The Associate Dean will engage Human Resources for assistance to carry out the recruitment activities of scheduling the interview, touring the campus, and orienting the applicant to the college (including sending written materials and referring the applicant to the website for the faculty handbook). Interviews The purpose of conducting interviews is to provide an opportunity for the candidate(s) to showcase their talents and qualifications allowing VCOM to determine which candidate will best serve VCOM in achieving its mission. Prior to an interview, the Campus Dean and Associate Dean will meet to determine the format of the interview and what methods will be used to evaluate candidates. The following methods should be considered: As part of the interview process, candidates will provide a lecture/seminar to students and/or current faculty as appropriate, and members of the faculty and team shall complete an evaluation form. The Associate Dean, Campus Dean, and the Search Committee shall develop questions to ask all applicants during the interview, which shall be reviewed by Human Resources. Additionally, interviewers should reference the list of improper interview questions (Appendix B) that may be interpreted as discriminatory. The Associate Dean, in consultation with the Campus Dean, will develop the itinerary, and where appropriate may include travel and lodging arrangements for the candidate(s). IRS regulations permit VCOM only to reimburse the applicant for his or her travel expenses. VCOM does not pay travel expenses for the applicant’s spouse or traveling companion. Approval by the Campus Dean is required prior to incurring any expenses beyond interview. In addition to interviews with the Search Committee, all candidates will interview with the Campus Dean and the Provost, appropriate Associate Dean, the Director for Human Resources, and when appropriate, the President. • One-on-one interviews with the members of the Search Committee • Group interviews (two interviewers) from the Search Committee

As part of the interview process, candidates should be provided with a tour of the campus and the community.
