Withdrawal Policies and Procedures

Withdrawal There are two types of withdrawals from VCOM, temporary and permanent: Temporary Withdrawal

A temporary withdrawal is defined as a temporary interruption in a student’s program of study that exceeds 180 days within an academic year or 12-month period, with reasonable expectation that the student will return from the withdrawal and that the student is capable of returning to the curricular program, meeting the technical standards, and being successful upon the return. Temporary withdrawals allow students the ability to pause their education at VCOM to seek treatment for medical or psychological conditions, see to extreme personal or family concerns, fulfill military obligations, complete external coursework/research, and/or address academic or behavioral issues. Temporary withdrawals may be requested by the student or may be required by VCOM. A student granted permission to take a temporary withdrawal will not be enrolled at VCOM for the duration of the leave. Students who do not comply with the requirements of a temporary withdrawal may be subject to dismissal by the Campus Dean. Permanent Withdrawal A permanent withdrawal is defined as a permanent separation from the college where substantial evidence exists that the student will not be capable of successfully returning to or continuing in the curricular program within a reasonable period of time or at all. Permanent withdrawals may be requested by the student or may be required by VCOM. Classifications for Withdrawal A request for a withdrawal, whether temporary or permanent, may be requested by the student to the Campus Dean for the following reasons: academic, administrative, medical, military, or personal reasons and must be pre approved using the processes outlined. A Temporary Academic Withdrawal is requested by a student to pursue research, an externship, a degree-granting program outside of VCOM, or any other career advancing activity that will exceed 180-days leave; however, a Temporary Academic Withdrawal is limited to 12-months of withdrawal to assure the student has the ability to complete their medical education within six years. A Temporary Academic Withdrawal may only occur between the OMS 3 and OMS 4-year curriculum. Students requesting a Temporary Academic Withdrawal must be in good standing at the time of the request. A student who is granted a Temporary Academic Withdrawal who decides not to re-enroll in the VCOM academic program may be granted a Permanent Personal Withdrawal. Administrative Withdrawal Administrative Withdrawals may be granted as a temporary or permanent withdrawal. A Temporary Administrative Withdrawal is a school-mandated leave to address academic, professional, or technical deficiencies that will exceed 180-days. The Promotion Board, Professional and Ethical Standards Board, or Honor Code Council may recommend a Temporary Administrative Withdrawal for a student if they have academic, Academic Withdrawal Academic Withdrawals may only be granted as temporary withdrawals.
