The organization also had guest speakers such as Richard Smith, pastor of Hope Point Church right here in Spartanburg, SC. Smith spoke to students, guests and physicians about his battle with Chondrosarcoma and provided some insight into the patient’s experience when faced with life and death illnesses. AOASM strives to provide lectures such as these in order to form well-rounded future physicians.

also hosted the annual 2017 VCOM Olympics along with the Bake/Chili- Cookoff, an event that brings the first and second year students together in a series of fun and athletic head-to- head challenges. With the inclusion of several new events engaging students of all different athletic backgrounds, a grueling battle ended with the Class of 2020 crowned as our Olympics Champion. This event helps to raise money for the organization in order to provide for future community outreach events. This year, AOASM hosted a Sports Physical Workshop in which two local sports medicine physicians provided hands-on teaching of how to complete a comprehensive sports physical.

The group also has continued the annual traditions of Jersey Day (a sportswear dress- down day) to raise money for sports equipment for local elementary school programs serving underprivileged children. Finally, members have the opportunity to attend various regional and national sports medicine conferences. New this year, VCOM-Carolinas AOASM hosted a casting clinic for the members to practice the techniques of putting on and removing short arm and short leg hard casts. Guidance from a trained expert allowed for feedback to be provided to help perfect the proper techniques. AOASM
