T he oldest primary care-based sports medicine specialty, the American Osteopathic Academy of Sports Medicine (AOASM) utilizes a holistic, comprehensive approach to the prevention, diagnosis, and management of sport and exercise-related injuries, disorders, dysfunctions, and disease processes. AOASM was created for medical students interested in sports medicine, and the group’s highest priority is to provide students with opportunities to acquire a skill set that could benefit them in their future careers, whether that be in family medicine, orthopedics, physical medicine and rehabilitation, or other related areas.

Cherokee High. Additionally, this year members helped out with sports physicals for the Shrine Bowl, Special Olympics, and local elementary schools. Working with local sports medicine physicians Dr. Stefan Montgomery, Dr. James McDermott and Dr. John Lucas, IV, VCOM- Carolinas AOASM members have continued to observe and participate in sideline coverage at the USC- Upstate basketball games, getting a firsthand glimpse into the life of a team physician. Through the local Sports Medicine Institute’s “Lunch and Learn” program, VCOM-Carolinas AOASM provides the opportunity for its members to attend monthly lectures on sports-related

At VCOM, AOASM provides students the opportunity to partner with the athletes, coaches, athletic trainers, and physicians of Spartanburg and the Upstate region, and teaches valuable skills and techniques to better their knowledge as future sports medicine physicians. The members of the VCOM-Carolinas AOASM student chapter have participated in many outreach and fundraising events this year, and numerous new events are planned for the future. Each year they help doctors in the community by assisting with sports physicals for athletes from local high schools and colleges. Their primary school affiliations are USC Upstate, Spartanburg High, and
