VCOM - Carolinas 2018 Yearbook

FEBRUARY

MARCH

In February, the theme of SOMA’s annual Gala was “Fire and Ice” and the event attracted over 300 students, faculty and staff. The Gala featured a raffle with items donated by the South Carolina Osteopathic Medical Society (SCOMS), 3M, BMW and a variety of other local businesses, with proceeds benefitting St. Luke’s Free Medical Clinic in Spartanburg and a free clinic at the Gaffney Senior Center.

Also in February, VCOM announced that A. Alan Turfe, Chairman and CEO of J M Smith Corporation, was named to the Advisory Board of the Carolinas campus. Along with his wife Lenda, Mr. Turfe enjoys taking part in the Spartanburg community and is active in philanthropy. “I wholeheartedly support all that VCOM stands for, especially their Mission of preparing physicians to meet the needs of medically underserved populations and promoting research,” Turfe said.

At the third annual VCOM-Carolinas Research Day, medical students, faculty and other participants submitted a total of 48 posters in the categories of biomedical, clinical and educational research. In addition to the featured speakers, six oral presentations were focused on topics in both biomedical and clinical research studies. Prizes were awarded to the top research posters.
