Global Communities We Serve

Honduras

O n July 1st, 2017, a group of students, faculty and staff from the VCOM Auburn and Carolinas campuses, as well as an external preceptor and volunteers, embarked on a one-week medical outreach trip to Santa Rosa, Honduras. Mission UpReach hosted the VCOM mission team, arranging in-country logistics, providing local transportation, coordinating site visits and organizing local interpreters to facilitate communication with the patients. With such excellent support, the team served approximately 300 children, adult and elderly patients, and filled more than 652 pharmaceutical prescriptions. Clinical activities included day trips to underserved areas in communities

surrounding Santa Rosa de Copan. Regardless of the location, the group quickly assembled tents and OMM tables to transform local community centers, schools and churches into temporary clinics. Outside of the clinic, the group enjoyed a cultural day at the Mayan Ruins. Medicines not used on the trip were donated to VCOM’s partner clinic – James Moody Adams Clinic in Tegucigalpa, as part of VCOM’s continuous care to local residents and international clinic network. The week spent in Honduras was fruitful for all involved. VCOM students were grateful for the opportunity to expand their medical experience while gaining intercultural sensitivity in and out of the clinic. The preceptors had

the chance to impart much of their knowledge and experience to the student doctors. The outreach trip was inspiring for all those who gave their time to meet needs and make a difference for underserved communities in Santa Rosa de Copan, Honduras.
