Appalachian Outreach

F rom the time they arrive on campus, VCOM- Carolinas students begin seeking out opportunities to get involved in community outreach by volunteering at local area health fairs, free clinics, and other services. Through VCOM’s Appalachian outreach programs and inter-professional early clinical experiences (IECEs), medical students improve their skills while promoting public and community health, understanding the value of preventive care, and realizing the rewards of caring for patients who have limited or no access to basic healthcare. Each summer, VCOM-Carolinas faculty and students organize and host an immersive day camp for high school students through the Summer Enrichment Experience (SEE) program. VCOM also coordinates Mini-Medical Schools, led by VCOM students, which take place in high schools in rural and medically underserved communities to promote wellness and prevent high-risk behaviors in early teens. Through these opportunities, VCOM students gain real experience and hone their skills under the direct supervision of VCOM faculty and clinical partners. Medical outreach is a key component in educating students to provide healthcare in challenging environments.
