T he Student Osteopathic Internal Medicine Association (SOIMA) started the 2017-2018 academic year with a welcome week event, which took place in downtown Spartanburg at Wild Ace Pizza to discuss various aspects of medicine, life in Spartanburg, and life as a medical student at VCOM. In the Fall, SOIMA assisted in hosting ACOP’s annual Pediatric Health Fair. SOIMA hosted a “Dress Up Like a Doc” station and members helped by volunteering at different stations in the health fair. The organization’s subgroups participated by holding booths for proper hand washing hygiene and for breast self-examinations. The group also

Lisa Carroll, MD assisted with the St. Matthew’s Free Clinic this year. SOIMA hosted its annual Health Fair at The Bridge in the neighborhood surrounding campus on March 3rd, 2018. This exciting event provides health checks and physicals for members of the community and gives them resources for their health and healthcare, and allowed first and second year students to work together and practice clinical skills as well as connect with members of the surrounding community.

hosted a workshop with Sonosite in which Dr. Myles, with the help of educators at Sonosite, came together to teach members basic Ultrasound techniques. SOIMA hosts an ongoing free health clinic every month at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church, providing free screenings as well as a platform for Access Health to help patients to gain access to regular health care. SOIMA collaborates with members from other groups and is in the process of adding nursing and pharmacy students to give the experience a more collaborative, interprofessional approach.
