SNMA Student National Medical Association

T he Student National Medical Association (SNMA) seeks to carry out the mission of the national chapter by supporting underrepresented minority students, raising culturally competent physicians, and serving the needs of underserved communities. The organization places a strong emphasis on forming lasting partnerships with local organizations. A welcome week event was held for current SNMA members to get to know and interact with Class of 2021 student. VCOM-Carolinas students enjoyed a night bowling, eating, and mingling. SNMA hosted a stress-relief game night during finals week. During this event, they not only played board

The organization partnered with the CDC for this event which provided materials to give patients and posters of certain diseases. Ashley Collier, the coordinator from Be the Match was on campus to help SNMA recruit students to join the bone marrow registry. SNMA recruited 48 students to join the registry. SNMA had a potluck style Christmas party at the home of Doralyn Jones, DO, in conjunction with HCMO. Students were able to speak and interact with the Classes of 2020 and 2021, share advice, and form new friendships. SNMA partnered with SOIMA to host their annual health fair at the Bridge

games but also gave tips on studying and not becoming overwhelmed during finals week. SNMA prepared an Arts and Crafts station at the peds fair where we helped make beaded bracelets with the attendees. For one month, SNMA presented weekly to the members of Upstate Fatherhood Coalition on various subjects including Substance Abuse, STDs, etc. The semi-annual health fair at Upstate Fatherhood Coalition provided services including taking patient history, measuring vitals, and monitoring serum glucose and cholesterol. Flu vaccinations were also provided.
