VCOM - Carolinas 2018 Yearbook

Serving Our Military and the Community

I t was a true honor to serve as the 2017-2018 president of the Students Association of Military Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons (SAMOPS). Being both a medical student and a member of the United States military, it offers a unique set of challenges [as well as] much needed mentorship and guidance. The foundation of this organization is to provide support for growth as both a future doctor and as a military officer. We have created a family, bonded by the two oaths we swore. We are a small organization, but filled with the hardest working individuals I know. Together we raised money for the Upstate Wounded Warrior Project and our local VA clinic. During the week of Memorial Day, we created a “Memorial Wall” to host names of loved ones lost, and for Veterans Day we showed our gratitude by giving each student and faculty member who served a T-shirt from their branch. We also brought in 3rd and 4th year military medical students to teach us about military rotations and residencies. When I think of military men and women I think of some of the most selfless people I know. Together we are pushing each other to become better doctors, better officers, better leaders, and better humans. These men and women live by two oaths, and have accepted challenges many others choose not to, and because they willingly accept these challenges, there is no end in sight for what they can accomplish.
