President and Provost
T he Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM) has three campuses with one common Mission: to graduate community-focused, globally-minded osteopathic physicians to meet the needs of the rural and medically underserved populations. The Mission is the heart and soul of VCOM and is shared by our students and faculty. Within our Mission is a focus on the communities we serve. VCOM is committed to each individual community where we reside as well as to the region we serve. While VCOM is one of the largest medical schools in the country, each VCOM campus maintains the feel of a smaller private college for the student and the community. VCOM is producing the type of physician this country needs and is focused on making a difference in the communities and region we serve.

Timothy J. Kowalski, DO, FACN
Dean for the Carolinas Campus
2 017-2018 was an exciting school year for VCOM-Carolinas as we celebrated our fourth graduating class of 147 newly minted DOs. With excellent match results, our graduates are now moving on to post graduate training in their specialties of choice as Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine. Consistent with our mission, the majority of our graduates will go on to pursue residency training in primary care specialties. This year our recently-opened VCOM Magnolia Research Center has been a hub for faculty and students alike. They continually engage in a broad range of research projects, focusing on the College’s mission of promoting research to improve human health. It is a pleasure seeing our superb VCOM students in action both within the academic setting and the community. I am inspired daily by their dedication to the College’s mission and their focus on the communities they serve.

JUNE
JULY
ReGenesis Health Care donated a mobile medical unit to VCOM, a gift that improves the College’s ability to provide care in Spartanburg and throughout the southern Appalachian region. With two exam rooms equipped for medical procedures, allowing patients to be treated on location, the mobile unit arrived on campus in early summer.
For two weeks in July, local high school students participated in an immersive, five-day medical school experience led by VCOM students and faculty. The high school students engaged in activities in the anatomy lab, research studies, games and tours of Spartanburg emergency vehicles to learn more about careers and research in the healthcare field.
In July, VCOM-Carolinas welcomed the Class of 2021! Our newest class of medical students and their families enjoyed a picnic on Sunday, July 30 on campus before starting their first day of Orientation the next morning.

AUGUST
SEPTEMBER
VCOM-Carolinas was in the path of near totality for the Solar Eclipse in August. Students, faculty and staff congregated on the patio and lawn to wonder at the astronomical phenomenon.
In September, we congratulated James A. Stroman II. This outstanding VCOM-Carolinas Class of 2021 student was the 2017 recipient of the Spencer C. Disher MD Scholarship.

VCOM-Carolinas students raised over 500 dollars on September 7 for the privilege of shaving Dr. Paulman’s head. The funds were donated to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief and to Doctors Without Borders, to aid relief efforts following Hurricane Harvey.
On September 29, the Via Wellness Intellectual Committee, Mental Health Awareness Task Force and Student Osteopathic Medical Association hosted a day of food, friendly games and other activities to promote physical, mental, and spiritual wellness of students, faculty, staff and families.
The newly donated VCOM-Carolinas Mobile Medical Unit’s entrance into local outreach took place October 27 at the Wellness Initiative for our Neighborhood (WIN) event, where VCOM-Carolinas faculty and students provided a variety of services and screenings to the public, in collaboration with many organizations in the area

DECEMBER
On November 4, the VCOM-Carolinas American College of Osteopathic
A group of medical students from colleges across the Upstate got a stressful taste of what actual hospital work is like. Students from VCOM-Carolinas, University of South Carolina Upstate nursing students, and Presbyterian College pharmacy students partnered for a patient treatment in a hospital setting.
The VCOM-Carolinas student chapter of the American College of Osteopathic Emergency Physicians (ACOEP) held a suture workshop in December to teach group members the proper technique and give them an opportunity to gain a degree of comfort with the procedure before adding the stress that comes with working on patients.
Pediatricians (ACOP) student organization held their annual
Pediatric Wellness Fair promoting the osteopathic value that health is an interplay of mind, body, and spirit. The event featured many interactive booths and resources for the children, caretakers and families that attended.

JANUARY
VCOM-Carolinas Student Services and SGA worked together to make the holidays special for local children in need. In the weeks leading up to the winter break, they collected non-perishable food items for Arcadia Elementary, a nearby school where 100% of the students qualify for free and reduced lunches. The items collected by students, faculty and staff helped to ensure these students had food over the holiday break.
AMWA held a “New Year, New You” clothing drive. The goal of the drive was to collect professional clothing and accessories for clients of SAFE Homes- Rape Crisis Coalition (SHRCC), a local organization that provides resources to victims of sexual assault and domestic violence. All contributions were donated to SHRCC’s thrift store, where their clients can shop for free.
Steven Corso, MD, is a specialist in hematology-oncology who practices at a number of Spartanburg area hospitals, including the Gibbs Cancer Center and Research Institute. On January 29, Dr. Corso shared a talk with VCOM-Carolinas students encouraging them to incorporate patients’ faiths into future care plans. This event was hosted by the Christian Medical and Dental Association (CMDA) student org.

FEBRUARY
MARCH
In February, the theme of SOMA’s annual Gala was “Fire and Ice” and the event attracted over 300 students, faculty and staff. The Gala featured a raffle with items donated by the South Carolina Osteopathic Medical Society (SCOMS), 3M, BMW and a variety of other local businesses, with proceeds benefitting St. Luke’s Free Medical Clinic in Spartanburg and a free clinic at the Gaffney Senior Center.
Also in February, VCOM announced that A. Alan Turfe, Chairman and CEO of J M Smith Corporation, was named to the Advisory Board of the Carolinas campus. Along with his wife Lenda, Mr. Turfe enjoys taking part in the Spartanburg community and is active in philanthropy. “I wholeheartedly support all that VCOM stands for, especially their Mission of preparing physicians to meet the needs of medically underserved populations and promoting research,” Turfe said.
At the third annual VCOM-Carolinas Research Day, medical students, faculty and other participants submitted a total of 48 posters in the categories of biomedical, clinical and educational research. In addition to the featured speakers, six oral presentations were focused on topics in both biomedical and clinical research studies. Prizes were awarded to the top research posters.

APRIL
On March 2, VCOM-Carolinas hosted a day full of events for prospective and incoming students, with an open house themed as “A Day in the Life of a Medical Student.” Following a welcome by Timothy J. Kowalski, DO, FACN, VCOM-Carolinas Dean and a lecture from Ronald Januchowski, DO, Associate Dean for the Curriculum, several concurrent sessions took place, with students rotating every 15 minutes.
The annual Southeastern Wilderness conference provides medical students with hands-on training in outdoor emergency situations. The VCOM– Carolinas ACOEP Wilderness Medicine special interest group participated in this year’s conference on March 17 and 18, with 32 members of the group attending the weekend-long event, camping out at Mistletoe State Park in Augusta, Georgia.
Drawing on the principles of life design articulated by Bill Burnett and Dale Evans of the Stanford University School of Design in their 2016 book, Designing Your Life: How to Build a Well-Lived Joyful Life , “Building a Vital Life” was presented to VCOM faculty and staff in monthly sessions between January and May. Five hour-long sessions included hands-on activities, reflection, small group discussions and homework assignments.
