CAROLINAS STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS

WILD Wilderness Medicine Society, a Special Interest Group of ACOEP

Members participated in the South- east MedWars Adventure Race, which extended 17 miles across Fort Gordon in Augusta, Georgia. Teams navigated the course using only a topographic map and compass while complet- ing a variety of medical scenarios. VCOM-Carolinas had three teams of four students complete the course between six and seven hours. WILD hosted Mark Ellis, MD, who presented information on Wilderness Medicine Fellowship programs with the Wilderness Medicine Society and EMRA. Additionally, VCOM student Zach Barfield presented information on snake recognition and envenom- ation treatment and procedures. Members also organized numer- ous camping and hiking excursions throughout the year.

The Wilderness Medicine (WILD) Special Interest Group is a subgroup of the American College of Osteopathic Emergency Physicians (ACOEP). The group’s mission is to promote camaraderie and learning medical skills in low resource settings.

This year, WILD members attended the Southeastern Student Wilderness Medicine Conference in Roanoke, Vir- ginia, where students attended work- shops including wilderness toxicology, splinting and carrying techniques, and swift water rescue.
