T he Student Advocate Association (SAA) is a non-profit organization of spouses, significant others, family members and friends of the osteopathic medical students. SAA’s purpose is to support VCOM students, the College and one another during the medical school journey. This year, members participated in numerous events that have created a strong social network at VCOM. SAA organized “Bake for Finals” events to supply healthy treats for finals week and catered events for other organizations including a BBQ luncheon and Italian dinner. Members regularly gather together for social

events such as hikes, movies, BBQs, baby showers, pizza get-togethers and ice skating. One of SAA’s highlights this year was the annual children’s Christmas event. The organization provided food and crafts to make the event fun for the whole family. To the delight of the children, Santa made an appearance that evening and read to the kids. Then he distributed a gift, supplied by the parents, to each child. SAA has hosted many exciting events, including the Budgeting and Loan Management Workshop this spring, which discussed debt and credit

management, and provided students with budgeting skills. For philanthropic activities, members volunteer at the local soup kitchen and put together “backpack buddies” packs for children who are less fortunate to take home over winter break. Other fun get-togethers for the group include paint night, wine tastings, an end of the year BBQ and spa nights. The Student Advocate Association is committed to serving the VCOM- Carolinas community.
