SAOAO Student American Osteopathic Academy of Orthopedics, a SOSA Special Interest Group

T he Student American Osteopathic Academy of Orthopedics (SAOAO) at VCOM– Carolinas is a subgroup of the Student Osteopathic Surgical Association (SOSA). This year was successful in expanding interest on campus, evident through 30 new members from the incoming class. SAOAO helped to expand the understanding of orthopedics at VCOM through invited speakers and opportunities to participate in hands-on clinics. Members participated in a suture clinic led by Ronald Januchowski,

DO, Associate Dean for Curriculum, Assessment, and Medical Education and hosted by SOSA. The organization also participated an open reduction internal fixation lab led by Dr. Hoenig, a local orthopedic surgeon, hosted by SOSA and AOASM. The 2016 AOAO convention in Washington, DC, will celebrate the national organization’s 75th anniversary. Members of VCOM–Carolinas SAOAO plan to represent the College and attend this event in October.
