ASIG Anesthesiology, a SOSA Special Interest Group

Ian McKenzie, Chair

T he Anesthesia Special Interest Group (ASIG) is a medical specialty sub-group of SOSA that was reinvigorated in the past year due to significant interest. The group was originally created to expose students to the field of anesthesiology and provide an avenue to become involved on the local and national level during the pre-clinical years. ASIG kicked things off this year by hosting Rick Forrest, MD, a practicing anesthesiologist at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center, who gave a presentation on “Life and Work in Anesthesiology.” His presentation was very thorough and provided significant insight to those curious about a lifestyle in anesthesiology along with the different nuances of the specialty.

Many members became engaged on the national level by participating in the American Society of Anesthesiologists Medical Student Component (ASA-MSC). Two members traveled to San Diego to participate in the annual Anesthesiology 2015 conference, where they acted as official VCOM–Carolinas student delegates and voted on issues relating to medical students and their role in the future of the profession.

ASIG is excited to welcome incoming members from the newest class at VCOM–

Carolinas, and finding new and creative ways to expose students to the field of anesthesiology.
