T he VCOM–Carolinas student chapter of SOIMA strives to enhance student knowledge about the field of internal medicine and its many exciting specialties. Through a monthly seminar series, members gather insight into the everyday life of physicians in the local community. This year, the executive board happily announced that Scott Girard, DO, a prestigious ACOI member on the Board of Directors and Panel for the Student/Residency presentation and Q&A session. In addition, faculty advisor Teresa Kilgore, DO, provided a wealth of information and advice on navigating medical school, and program, planned to travel to VCOM in February for a

SOIMA provides students with the opportunity to present their research abstracts at conferences. Through these events and free membership in the national allopathic and osteopathic internal medicine associations, students collect a wide range of knowledge and abundant resources to help guide them in their future careers. The organization hosted several social events this year, including an ice cream social during orientation week, and an evening at Music on Main to introduce new students to one of the many cultural events the city has to

offer. The cardiology special interest group also organized a bowling night. SOIMA promotes collaboration with other student organizations on campus, including providing a station to teach children proper hand washing at the annual Kids Wellness Fair, and microbiology tutoring sessions for first year students. SOIMA’s main presence in the community is at St. Matthew’s Church, where monthly free health care clinics take place under the supervision of VCOM affiliated physicians. Students have the opportunity to take complete histories and perform physical exams before presenting to the physicians for diagnosis and treatment,
