OB/GYN American College of Osteopathic Obstetricians and Gynecologists

Andrea Hughes, President; Felisa Saldutti, Vice President; Matthew Stewart, Treasurer

T he mission of the OB/GYN organization is to foster and develop awareness and interest in the specialty of Obstetrics and Gynecology among the medical student population; facilitate interested students to develop highly competitive residency applications; increase awareness of women’s health issues; educate students about sub-specialties in OB/GYN and the services provided by women’s health physicians; and coordinate service opportunities that promote the health and well- being of the community. This year has been exciting for the organization, beginning with hosting a renowned physician, Draion M. Burch, DO, also known as “Dr. Drai,” a nationally recognized speaker, author and

consultant. He spoke about how the field of obstetrics and gynecology is changing, improving, and growing through social media. He graciously spent time with members, explaining how he uses technology to reach more women and ultimately educate the population on important women’s issues. As a new class began medical school at VCOM, the OB/GYN organization hosted a relaxing yoga event with Adrienne Ables, PharmD, giving students a break from the excitement of starting school while introducing them to the OB/GYN organization. Later, the organization hosted its annual suture clinic in conjunction with the Family Medicine organization (ACOFP), where members socialized, then

learned and practiced basic and advanced suturing techniques.

During the annual future considerations meetings,

members interviewed OB/GYN clinical advisors Ty Robinson, DO, and Natasha Jeter, MD, with questions regarding boards, clinical rotations, how to balance work and family, residency and much more. Members attended the annual American College of Osteopathic Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOOG) conference in Florida, learning cutting edge information on this ever-changing field, and giving members a glimpse into future career opportunities, networking, and meeting other OB/GYN student organization members from around the country.
