MOVE Medical Outreach and Volunteer Effort

Kaleigh Featherstone, President

T he Medical Outreach and Volunteer Effort (MOVE) organization works to embrace the VCOM mission by serving the surrounding underserved community in healthcare, education, mentoring, and many other altruistic efforts. This year, MOVE grew with the addition of three regular volunteer sites and over 150 new volunteers. The organization takes pride in having such a passionate advisor, Petra Warren, MD, who serves the community by setting up free local health screenings and serves regularly in the surrounding free clinics. Members are actively invested, taking vitals and histories at the free clinics, helping serve the homeless at the soup kitchen,

mentoring children, giving blood, and getting kids excited about wellness. There are also opportunities for individual volunteer projects and research through local clinics. MOVE is the perfect fit for any avid volunteer! Throughout the past year, MOVE served the community in a big way. Students volunteered at St. Luke’s Community free clinic and the Middle Tyger free clinic. Two Saturdays each month, volunteers had the opportunity to serve and interact with the homeless guests at Spartanburg Soup Kitchen. MOVE also hosted its annual blood drive, and 63 lives saved through blood donations. Volunteers had the opportunity to “adopt” a little brother or sister through BBBS, raising money through the Bowl

for Kids Sake Event, and serving children and their families at the BBBS Christmas Party. In conjunction with ACOP’s Kids Wellness fair, MOVE hosted an educational booth with face painting, focusing on the importance of complimenting others with the creation of compliment cards. Members also helped complete the Cleveland Park Playground, a community build project that utilized many volunteers from the community. MOVE has made a large impact on the surrounding VCOM community this year. Members plan to continue embracing VCOM’s mission of serving the underserved community and to keep having a positive impact on those they serve. Are you ready to “MOVE” someone today?
