Miscellaneous Alumni Proper usage is as follows:

Time Use figures except for noon and midnight. Do not use noon or midnight following figures representing time. Use a colon to separate hours from minutes. Distinguish time of day by using “a.m.” and “p.m.” in lowercase with period following each letter. Correct 11 a.m., 1 p.m., 3:30 p.m., 9-11 p.m., 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Core Clinical Hospitals and Residency Partners In communications, use the official hospital name instead of a shortened conversational version. Correct: The LewisGale Hospital Montgomery in Blacksburg. Incorrect: Montgomery Regional Hospital in Blacksburg. Note: Hospital ownership and names may change over time, so please visit the website at www.vcom.edu to check the current list of clinical hospitals.

Telephone Numbers Preferred: 540-231-4000 Extensions: 540-231-4000, ext. 1234 Whole numbers Spell out whole numbers one through nine; use numerals for 10 and above. Fractions standing alone are spelled out. For fractions with whole numbers, use numerals. If a number begins a sentence, it should be spelled out. Correct: She has eight cats and 11 dogs. About one-fifth of her salary goes to buy 2 1/2 tons of pet food each year. When large numbers are spelled out, used a hyphen to connect a word ending in “y” to another word. Example: twenty-one or fifty-five Semicolon Within a series, semicolons should be used to separate individuals with titles from the next portion of the series. Correct: Attendees of the event included Dixie Tooke-Rawlins, DO, president and provost; Jan Willcox, DO, the Virginia campus dean; and other faculty members.
