T he goal of the Student Osteopathic Internal Medicine Association (SOIMA) is to stress the understanding of osteopathic principles in relationship to disease in the practice of internal medicine and provide students with an early exposure to clinical settings through volunteer opportunities. In August of 2019, SOIMA hosted a panel of VCOM’s third-year medical students. The panel was to seek insight and beneficial information on Step 1 board preparation. Additionally, SOIMA also led a “Panel Night” in September featuring six physicians specializing in internal medicine, gastroenterology, cardiology, general surgery, obstetrics/gynecology and palliative care to allow students who may be interested in these fields to ask questions and engage in dialogue. From October to November of 2019, SOIMA club members were given the opportunity to sign up for the American College of Osteopathic Internists Annual Convention in Arizona. During Antibiotic Awareness Week, SOIMA held an informative panel with guests from VCOM, East Alabama Medical Center, Auburn University School of Nursing and Auburn University Harrison School of Pharmacy to help students discern the impact of antibiotics use in the community. The VCOM-Auburn Chapter of SOIMA is affiliated with Mercy Medical Clinic, which is funded through donations. From July 2019-February 2020, SOIMA club members were able to sign up to volunteer in shifts at the clinic on a monthly basis to give back to the community and put clinical skills learned in classes to practice.
