T hroughout the year, the Hispanic Community Medical Outreach (HCMO) student organization hosts events that support VCOM’s international outreach trips, enhance the cultural competency of students, serve the local and international Hispanic community in need, educate students on Spanish language and diversity, provide guest speaker opportunities and provide a fun, social atmosphere with a Latin twist! The Hispanic Community Medical Outreach is an organization that is dedicated towards improving healthcare in the Latin community both in Auburn and abroad. HCMO works diligently to promote Latin cultures to the VCOM family. First- and second-year students attend Spanish classes hosted by HCMO. These classes help facilitate the communication of VCOM’s students with patients while on international outreach trips. Spanish classes help to fulfill VCOM’s mission of becoming community-focused physicians. In the past, these events provided lunch and interactive lessons in Spanish where students were able to learn and practice conversations in Spanish. HCMO works to bring speakers to campus like Dr. Julian Trivino, who is a critical care specialist in Orlando, Florida. Dr. Trivino, who spoke to HCMO members last year, was one of the few U.S. mainland doctors to help in the relief of Hurricane Maria. Additionally, speakers like Dr. Trivino offer residency and board studying advice to students. HCMO has also held events in the past like Fiesta Latina, potluck dinners, diet and fitness lectures, Salsa dancing and diversity and cultural awareness talks. From volunteering in the community to hosting cultural awareness events and Spanish classes, HCMO takes great pride in contributing to VCOM’s mission. Like VCOM, HCMO is helping to prepare globally minded and community-focused physicians.
