T he American Osteopathic Academy of Sports Medicine (AOASM), VCOM-Auburn’s Sports Medicine Club, has been very active on campus this year, providing a variety of opportunities for students to get involved. AOASM thanks the club faculty discipline chairs, Dr. Edison and Dr. Abdullah, as well as all the speakers and support staff for helping and supporting the club this past year. Students had the opportunity to volunteer at Columbus State University and Tuskegee University to help conduct sports physicals for their respective student-athletes. Physical therapist Matt Watson and physical therapist assistant Megan Johnson led an introductory dry-needling and cupping event. AOASM also sponsored the casting clinic during VCOM’s annual surgical conference. Additionally, several members participated in the Fit to Play event at Auburn High School. This event emphasized the importance of educating young athletes on injury prevention and recovery. The Southeastern Regional Sports Medicine Conference was by far the biggest event the chapter has ever hosted. Keynote speaker Dr. Adam Anz is a renowned orthopedic surgeon. Dr. Michael Zabala presented on the future of casting and 3D printing in the world of sports medicine. The afternoon sessions consisted of a spine board clinic, an advanced musculoskeletal exam clinic, an ultrasound clinic, an OMM in sports medicine clinic and an IV and fluid therapy workshop. During the conference, students
received hands on experience learning from experts in the field, Dr. Jos Edison, Dr. Siraj Abdullah, Dr. Brett Sprouse, Derek Holley, DPT, and Dr. Michael Goodlett.
