T he VCOM-Auburn chapter of the American College of to develop awareness of and interest in the specialty of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Additionally, the chapter attempts to increase awareness of women’s health issues, educate students on sub-specialties of OB/ GYN and coordinate service opportunities which promote the health and well-being of women in our community. One of the major goals of the executive board this past year was to provide hands-on and interactive learning experiences for students. In an effort to meet this goal, students were given the opportunity to participate in an obstetric delivery in the simulation lab. The session began with a short informational talk regarding how to conduct an obstetric delivery, then small groups of students were walked through a delivery simulation. An additional opportunity for early exposure to OB/GYN procedures was provided for the second-year medical students when a hysterectomy was conducted in the anatomy lab and broadcast onto the screens. Students were provided step-by-step narration of the process as it was occurring. VCOM-Auburn ACOOG ended the year by bringing in the holiday season with a Tacky Sweater Party complete with Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) case presentations from Dr. Kraig Smith and Dr. Kenneth Harris. In addition to these fun and informative learning experiences, ACOOG hosted many speakers throughout the school year, including Dr. Smith and Dr. Harris, the club mentors who spoke about a career as an OB/GYN practitioner. ACOOG also hosted a student panel to discuss what it takes to match into an OB/GYN residency program.
