VCOM Auburn Yearbook 2019

The speakers were Dr. Lee Sharma, a local OB/GYN physician, and Dr. Soma Nagendran, a retired pathologist who was the first female physician hired at East Alabama Medical Center (EAMC). Additionally, the chapter recently had a visiting professor from the national ACOOG organization, Dr. Lauryn McNally, who presented on osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM) in the OB/GYN patient as well as how to obtain a competitive residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology. The VCOM-Auburn ACOOG chapter has been so fortunate to have many speakers who have given their time to share their stories and knowledge with VCOM students.

complete with Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) case presentations from Dr. Kraig Smith and Dr. Kenneth Harris. Students were asked to bring feminine hygiene products as donations for entry to this event and the items were then donated to a homeless shelter for teenage girls in Tuskegee, AL. In addition to these fun and informative learning experiences, ACOOG hosted many speakers throughout the school year, including Dr. Smith and Dr. Harris, the club mentors who spoke about a career as an OB/GYN practitioner. In the late fall, in partnership with the American Medical Women’s Association (AMWA), ACOOG hosted two physician speakers from the community who are mother and daughter. It was yet another inspiring talk about how wonderful the field of medicine is, how rewarding a career as an OB/ GYN practitioner is, and how to balance all of the aspects of our lives we need to be successful.
