The American College of Osteopathic Emergency Physicians (ACOEP), founded in 1975, exists to support high quality emergency medicine care, promote and protect the interest of Osteopathic emergency physicians, ensure the highest standards of postgraduate education and provide leadership in research through the Foundation for Osteopathic Emergency Medicine, in a distinct unified profession. VCOM’s ACOEP chapter introduces students to the field of emergency medicine by providing speakers, organizing clinical skills workshops, providing CPR classes to students and promoting safety and medical education in the community. ACOEP welcomed Julian Trivino, DO, at the beginning of the year. Dr. Trivino discussed how to match in emergency medicine, residency tips, and disaster relief efforts in Puerto Rico following Hurricane Maria. Eighteen members traveled to the annual

ACOEP Scientific Assembly in Chicago, Illinois to network with program directors across the country and participate in lecture seminars as well as hands-on training workshops. Three ACOEP chapter members placed first in the Advanced Airway Challenge against other medical students and residents. At the second annual VCOM-Auburn SOSA Surgical Conference, ACOEP organized an airway management workshop. This event included hands-on laryngoscopy training from an emergency medicine physician, a CRNA and an anesthesiologist preceded by a showing of a video laryngoscopy. Concluding the workshop was a final airway challenge to test students’ skills. ACOEP’s community presence was strengthened through the partnership of an American Heart Association (AHA) Training Center to provide convenient and
