The Student American Academy of Osteopathy (SAAO) is the Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM) club at VCOM-Auburn. Based on guidelines set by the National American Academy of Osteopathy (AAO), members strive to acquire a better understanding of osteopathic principles, theories and practices by helping students attain maximum proficiency in osteopathic structural diagnosis and treatment, fostering a clear concept of the clinical applications of Osteopathy in health and disease. The VCOM-Auburn chapter is responsible for hosting OMM practical exam reviews as well as “mock” practical examinations to prepare students for the upcoming OMM practical exams. This year, SAAO continued to host mock practicals for the first-year students as well as host workshops. SAAO started the year off by welcoming first-year students by treating

them to some donuts to encourage them on their upcoming first medical school exam. The club also introduced the students to “OMM in Pregnancy.” At this workshop, students were able to see how OMM can be incorporated into a pregnancy so that the process can proceed more smoothly. Students were also invited to learn about physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R). During this Q&A session, students were able to learn about this field of medicine. Additionally, for the first VCOM-Auburn Osteolympics this past year, the club hosted the dodgeball tournament. SAAO members are motivated to engage in rewarding extracurricular activities. They are especially motivated to promote academic success of osteopathy through mock practicals and through workshops that encourage the use of osteopathic medicine.
