Throughout the year, the Hispanic Community Medical Outreach (HCMO) student organization hosted events that supported VCOM’s international outreach trips, enhanced the cultural competency of students, served the local and international Hispanic community in need, educated students on Spanish language and diversity, provided guest speaker opportunities and provided a fun, social atmosphere with a Latin twist! HCMO welcomed new students to a meeting and merchandise fair to provide more information for those interested in medical outreach in the Hispanic community. At this event, students had the opportunity to learn about the club, ask questions, join, buy merchandise and meet students with similar passions. First- and second-year students attended Spanish classes hosted by HCMO. These classes helped facilitate the communication of VCOM’s students with patients while on international outreach trips. Spanish classes help to fulfill our mission of becoming community-focused physicians. This event provided lunch and interactive lessons in

Spanish where students were able to learn and practice conversations in Spanish.

HCMO partnered with ACOEP in hosting Dr. Julian Trivino, who is a critical care specialist in Orlando, Florida. Dr. Trivino was one of the few U.S. mainland doctors to help in the relief of Hurricane Maria. He was able to share his experiences when dealing with a devastating event and how to cope when faced with adversity. His experiences while in Puerto Rico were remarkable and truly inspiring. Dr. Trivino also offered residency and board studying advice. Being a DO himself, Dr. Trivino was very helpful in providing students insight on what to do in order to match into the specialty of choice. This event also featured dinner from El Dorado Mexican restaurant. First-, second- and third-year students attended Dr. Trivino’s talk, which was very insightful. Dr. Trivino answered a lot of questions and was more than willing to help guide students. To celebrate the holidays, students and faculty attended Fiesta Latina while incorporating bits and pieces from other cultures with a potluck dinner. VCOM-Auburn’s Dr. Dani McCullough led
