The American Osteopathic Academy of Sports Medicine (AOASM), VCOM-Auburn’s Sports Medicine club, has been very busy this past year. From hosting various speakers, providing interactive ultrasound clinics, representing the school at the 2018 AOASM Clinical Conference and volunteering in the community, the club had a variety of opportunities for students to get involved. Several ultrasound clinics were taught by Dr. Jos Edison and Dr. Siraj Abdullah, where students received hands-on experience using diagnostic ultrasound imaging and learned about specialized physical exams for different joints. AOASM also sponsored a joint injection and casting clinic during VCOM’s annual surgical conference. Students learned how to utilize ultrasound to identify potential injection sites and practiced applying upper extremity casts.

Additionally, Auburn University Team Physician, Dr. Mike Goodlett, led a spineboard clinic for students to practice game day spineboarding techniques. Additionally, physical therapist Matt Watson led an introductory dry-needling event. The Sports Medicine club welcomed several speakers over the past year. Dr. Ron Lee discussed topics regarding low back pain and chronic pain management. Coach Robb Taylor of Auburn’s Wheelchair Basketball team spoke about adaptive sports and common injuries pertaining to his athletes. Paula Merchant, an Auburn physical therapist, led students through several case studies and how to approach common musculoskeletal complaints. Dr. Mike Sampson, a former WWE physician and an associate dean at PCOM-Georgia, discussed his career path and unique opportunities available in the field of sports medicine.
