T he American Osteopathic Academy of Sports Medicine (AOASM) is the oldest primary care- based sports medicine specialty. It utilizes a holistic, comprehensive approach to the prevention, diagnosis and management of sport and exercise- related injuries, disorders, dysfunctions and disease processes. The VCOM-Auburn chapter of AOASM is dedicated to medical students with an interest in sports medicine. The club hosts and collaborates with other student organizations to provide workshops for students to learn skills beneficial to a career in sports medicine, such as ultrasound imaging, dry-needling and spine-boarding. In addition to these workshops, the club hosts a variety of talks and monthly sessions to learn about the abundant possibilities that a career in sports medicine can allow. This year, the VCOM-Auburn chapter hosted a presentation from the Auburn Wheelchair Basketball team. The current Auburn/ Team USA head coach and athletic trainer for the team introduced the ins and outs of wheelchair basketball along with the variety of injuries and biomechanics to consider in adapted sports.

Current officers David Levin, Elizabeth McBee, Victoria Nutting and Derek Bass attended the 2018 AOASM Clinical Conference in Columbus, Ohio, where students, physicians, fellows and residents gathered to discuss current topics in sports medicine. Topics included the future of concussion treatment, stem cell theories and sport-specific injuries, among a variety of others. Students were able to network with practicing physicians in the field and participate in a variety of breakout sessions to learn skills that can be brought back to the local chapter.
