T he American College of Osteopathic Emergency Physicians, founded in 1975, exists to support high quality emergency care, promote and protect the interest of Osteopathic emergency physicians, ensure the highest standards of postgraduate education and provide leadership in research through the Foundation for Osteopathic Emergency Medicine, in a distinct unified profession. VCOM’s chapter of ACOEP introduces students to the field of emergency medicine by providing speakers, organizing clinical skills workshops, providing CPR classes to students, and promoting safety and medical education in the community. This year, ACOEP trained a dozen students in the art of “moulage” to prepare for the second annual Disaster Day training event with the Auburn University School of Nursing. Through the use of theatrical makeup, the day’s “victims” displayed a variety of injuries spanning from simple abrasions and burns to amputations and arterial bleeds. Throughout the year, ACOEP hosted several guest speakers who discussed a variety of topics including balancing family life with the

emergency physician lifestyle, understanding the basics of EKGs and emergent airways in the emergency department. This year, ACOEP was able to send 12 students to ACOEP’s Scientific Assembly in Denver, CO, where students were able to participate in hands- on training workshops, lecture seminars and a Residency Program Expo. A unique element of ACOEP is the wilderness medicine program. This group meets on a weekly basis to provide training by VCOM-Auburn’s J.J. White, DO, PhD, followed by a group run. This year marked the inaugural VCOM Rescue Race, where 19 teams of VCOM-Auburn students converged on Chewacla State Park in Auburn, Alabama for a wilderness medicine adventure race. In all, 57 competitors ran, biked and kayaked 10 miles of trail while participating in five simulated medical scenarios, each sponsored by a different VCOM club.
