Tegucigalpa, Honduras

V COM-Auburn faculty, staff, students and volunteers traveled to Tegucigalpa, Honduras for a medical outreach trip March 24-31, 2018. In partnership with the Baxter Foundation, Moody Adams (JMA) Clinic in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. This clinic serves an especially impoverished area of Tegucigalpa, offering primary care, gynecological care, prenatal services, dentistry and pharmaceutical needs. On average, the JMA Clinic serves approximately 40 patients daily, and also offers a nutrition and training center that assists families of children that are evaluated as malnourished. In addition to serving Tegucigalpa, VCOM faculty VCOM assists with the operation of the James

and students provide prevention and primary care services to rural villages and communities outside the city. The VCOM medical outreach team set up temporary clinics each day to provide medical care in and around the capital city, caring for more than 480 impoverished patients during the course of the week. They also filled approximately 1,500 pharmaceutical prescriptions during the week. Medicines not used on the trip were left at the JMA Clinic. Any patients needing follow up care were referred back to the JMA Clinic. One OB-GYN doctor and up to four students were assigned daily to provide women’s health care at the JMA Clinic in Tegucigalpa. During the week,

the medical team treated more than 100 women while at the JMA Clinic. The week spent in Honduras was a rewarding experience for all involved. VCOM students were grateful for the opportunity to expand their medical experience while gaining cultural experience in and outside of the clinic. The preceptors had the chance to impart much of their knowledge and experience to the student doctors as well as to acquire firsthand experience in tropical medicine. The outreach trip was inspiring for all those who gave their time to meet needs and make a difference in underserved communities in Honduras.
