The week spent in The Dominican Republic was a rewarding experience for all involved. VCOM students were grateful for the opportunity to expand their medical experience while learning about the local culture. Trip preceptors had the chance to impart much of their knowledge and experience to the student doctors. The outreach trip was inspiring for all those who gave their time to meet needs and make a difference for underserved communities in the Dominican Republic.

VCOM’s hosting organization, the Punta Cana Foundation, arranged in-country logistics, coordinated site visits and organized local interpreters to facilitate communication with the patients. Over the course of both of these trips, the medical teams served approximately 1,000 patients that included pediatric, adult and elderly patients, and filled more than 1,000 pharmaceutical prescriptions. Clinical activities in the Dominican Republic included day trips to communities throughout the La Altagracia province, which is the most eastern part of the country. The VCOM Verón Primary Care Clinic in the Dominican Republic provides regular care to approximately 200 patients a day. The clinic was launched in 2006 and is a collaborative partnership among VCOM, the Punta Cana Foundation Additionally, the Oscar de la Renta Pediatric Care Center, which opened in May 2017, serves more than 140 children per day, providing much- and the government of the Dominican Republic.
