hemorrhage control and the use of tourniquets in the field. John Willingham demonstrated proper intubation techniques to students. This session provided hands-on training with cricoid pressure and intubation. Student-instructors William Tremlett, Heather Milloy, John Willingham and Daniel Krautter provided hands-on training for airway control, intubation and cricoid pressure techniques. Corban Caldwell taught proper spine boarding techniques by demonstrating proper application of a C-collar and stabilization of the cervical spine. During this session, students were trained on proper stabilization, immobilization and spine boarding techniques, as well as traction. Also at the conference, Swaid N. Swaid, MD, demonstrated various neurosurgical procedures. Swaid is a neurosurgeon from Birmingham, Alabama who came to teach various techniques
such as a Burr-hole and bone flap technique. Swaid also brought his instrument representative so he could demonstrate the use of the same instruments used in his operating room. At the conference, students were also provided with hands-on training with laparoscopy. Students practiced hand-eye coordination with laparoscopy training units. Lastly, J.J. White, DO, PhD, demonstrated the use of a portable ultrasound in the placement of a femoral line. Students were briefed on the indications and were then given hands-on guidance with the ultrasound unit. Overall, these past three years for SOSA have been full of events that facilitated both knowledge and experiences in the field of surgery, engaged with surgeons in the local community and involved members of the community.
