S OSA is the official student organization of the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons (ACOS). It was established to provide a means for students interested in surgical specialties to participate in the activities and governance of the ACOS. The VCOM-Auburn chapter works hard to provide educational experiences for its members. VCOM’s local chapter serves to represent and educate future osteopathic surgeons. This includes stressing the understanding of osteopathic principles in relationship to disease in the practice of surgery, helping promote education in the field of surgery and providing a forum for discussion among students and surgeons. SOSA aims to expose and foster the interest of its members to the field of surgery. SOSA, at VCOM-Auburn, offers additional surgical education, volunteer opportunities and hands on learning of basic surgical skills through workshops to encourage the pursuit of excellence. SOSA appointed several second year medical students to uphold leadership positions, encouraging each of them to work on interpersonal skills and dependability. Ultimately, SOSA wishes to provide

experiences to VCOM students that will help propel them during clinical rotations and throughout the entirety of their career. Throughout the first year, SOSA had many opportunities for members to get real, hands- on experience and learn from the experiences of guest lecturers. Students participated in IO access workshops, a Cricoid pressure workshop, suture clinics and an appendectomy clinic. SOSA members were also given a pre-hospital demonstration, a Broselow tape demonstration and a Cricothyroidotomy demonstration. SOSA also planned to hold a trauma in the elderly lecture, a joint relocation demonstration and an advanced suturing techniques demonstration. This year, the Anesthesiology Special Interest Group (ASIG) of SOSA held a food drive for Saint Michael’s Catholic Church and participated in a workshop hosted by the Southeast Alabama Area Health Education Center (AHEC). Overall, these past two years have been full of events that facilitated both knowledge and experiences in the field of surgery, engaged with surgeons in the local community and involved members of the community.
