T he VCOM Chapter of the American College of Osteopathic Pediatricians promotes awareness and understanding of pediatric medicine within the college and community. The organization provides members numerous opportunities to interact with children, including general awareness of the medical profession. Throughout the year, special guests are invited to speak to the club about pediatric health- related issues. This gives students an opportunity to gain a better perspective on this specialty area. The ACOP student club at VCOM-Auburn has hit the ground running since its inception in block two. The Auburn community has welcomed ACOP members into local schools, festivals and other events that provide health education for children and their families. In December of 2015, members participated in the first “Grade-School Medical School” at Wright’s Mill Road Elementary School in Auburn. Four stations were set up, and children rotated through to learn about different aspects of being an Osteopathic work with local schools to promote healthy living and

physician. This opportunity was very special because it combined two of ACOP’s favorite things— osteopathic medicine and children! Seeing how excited the children were to learn about the osteopathic profession highlighted the “bigger picture” of medical school. This event, along with many others, will continue for years to come. This past year, members held a Valentine’s Day card making party and put together “lesson plans” for ACOP’s Grade School Med-School. ACOP members have tried to get out and get active as much as possible by playing baseball with some amazing kids at Miracle League and running in the Dyslexia Dash 5K. Members also stayed busy delivering baskets of food each week to families for Nourish Alabama. ACOP has flourished this year thanks to our amazing members’ commitment and constant excitement for the activities we put together. ACOP is starting to plant its roots here, and members look forward to continuing to grow as an organization and as a part of, not only the VCOM community but the Auburn community as well.
