T he American College of Osteopathic Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOOG) is dedicated to providing outreach services and education to the surrounding community and abroad, and to ultimately uphold osteopathic principles and practices. Additionally, ACOOG strives to provide countless medical and educational opportunities to the members of the organization by fostering and developing awareness and interest in the specialty of Obstetrics and Gynecology among the medical student population. ACOOG also facilitates interested students to develop highly competitive residency applications, educates students about sub-specialties in OB/GYN and the services provided by women’s health physicians and coordinate service opportunities which promote the health and well- being of women and neonates in the community. ACOOG held the following events in 2016-17: OB/GYN 101; Dinner with a fourth- year VCOM student: Interview trail and board prep tips and tricks; cohosted suture clinics during the 2015-16 school year; Valentine treats and Christmas gift baskets for labor and delivery and nursery nurses; baby shower surprises for Dr. and Mrs. Martin and Dr. and Mrs. Harrison; cohosted the suture clinics during the 2016-17 school year; Pregnancy-focused nutrition with Dr. Annie Newton; women- focused OMM clinic with Dr. Stackhouse; waterbirth workshop; trauma in pregnancy clinic; what is a doula brownbag lunch; women’s health emergencies with Dr. Khoury from UAB.

During the week of May 15-19, 2017, ACOOG hosted National Women’s Health Week to help promote awareness about primarily female diseases, issues that women face, the field of women’s health and the overall well being of women. ACOOG kicked off the week on Monday by having the nutritionist, Dr. Kirby, speak about nutrition in pregnancy, along with other events that week.

On June 7, the American College of Osteopathic Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the Student Osteopathic Surgery Association hosted a subcutaneous suture clinic. Dr. Brisson instructed the 100 students in attendance the proper technique for suturing, and the students then practiced the new technique on the cadavers.
