OUTREACH
students participate in the outreach trips and VCOM third- and fourth-year students participate in the one-month clinical rotations. While the impact of one trip may be eye opening for the VCOM students, the reputation of the program continues to grow and VCOM has become a great partner for these organizations in providing sustainable care. El Salvador For a period of time, El Salvador became a risk for travel, however over the past year and under their new President, avenues for safe travel have been reinstated. VCOM will resume outreach to El Salvador in the coming year.
Providing Joy as well as Healthcare
The work of the VCOM community in our international communities doesn’t stop when the trips are over. Year-round clinics provide continuity of care, but more than that, VCOM students have engaged in fundraisers to enhance quality of life. In 2025, students raised more than $4,500 to provide Christmas gifts to 116 children in the Baxter Clinic’s nutritional program. In addition, 200 goody bags and 42 Christmas presents were given at an all-girls orphanage in Santa Rosa, Honduras.
Jonas Rawlins, DO (left, on a recent VCOM trip to Honduras), has joined VCOM as vice president for International Affairs, succeeding Dean Sutphin, PhD (far right), who retired after 20 years leading the College’s international program. We are grateful to both for their dedication to VCOM’s mission.
