OUTREACH
Camp is a collaborative effort among faculty, staff, and students designed to inspire interest in science and medical careers. Participants engaged in hands-on clinical experiences, simulation training, biomedical experiments, and small-group research projects presented to faculty and parents at the end of each week. Mini-Med Schools Between October 2024 and March 2025, VCOM-Virginia visited four high schools in rural Southwest Virginia to deliver Mini-Med Schools outreach programs. Under the leadership of Ed Magalhaes, PhD, LPC, director of Counseling
Services, students and faculty worked in small groups to discuss healthcare career pathways, medical school experiences, and healthy behaviors. Sessions included CPR training, interactive health education, and exposure to osteopathic medicine.
The proceeds from this event contribute to other VCOM-Virginia SAMOPS supported causes such as the Wounded Warrior Project and Quilts of Valor. Pickleball for Asheville July – The VCOM-Virginia chapter of the Ame rican Osteopathic Academy of Sports Medicine (AOASM) organized a pickleball tournament to support communities in western North Carolina impacted by Hurricane Helene’s historic flooding in September 2024. The one-day fundraiser raised more than $500 for disaster relief efforts through the Red Cross.

Oct. 11, 2025 – The SAMOPS 5K is an annual, often military themed charity run organized by the Stud ent Association of Military Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons (SAMOPS).
