Foundation Honors Gala. Major Michael Brisson, DO, VCOM-Auburn ’19, was honored as the Emerging Leader for the state of Alabama. Dr. Brisson was a member of the inaugural class at VCOM Auburn. “I specifically chose VCOM-Auburn because I knew I would be prepared to provide full-scope primary care to the citizens of these counties,” he said. Before entering medical school, Dr. Brisson served as a MEDEVAC Black Hawk pilot and was deployed to Afghanistan from 2010 to 2011. During that time, he worked closely with flight surgeons—many of whom were osteopathic physicians—which helped Osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) performed by those same physicians also helped relieve the back discomfort that comes with long hours of flying. solidify his decision to pursue medicine.

In announcing the award, the American Osteopathic Foundation noted that Dr. Brisson is a board-certified family and obesity medicine physician who “serves across emergency departments, VA clinics, and as EMS medical director at Enterprise State Community College.” The foundation added that, “Widely published and nationally recognized, Dr. Brisson exemplifies servant leadership and the osteopathic commitment to treating the whole person.”
